Article Details

Subflows are an Automate Studio feature that enable exporting a flow to the node palette, where it appears as a single node that can be used in other flows.

Subflows are especially useful for flows with many nodes and complex logic. Subflows have two unique kinds of nodes, Input nodes and Output nodes.

  • The Input node receives data from the previous node outside the subflow. Subflows can have either no inputs or one input. A subflow that is meant to receive and process data must have the Input node as its first node.
  • The Output node sends the output data to the next node outside the subflow, so every output node must be the last node in the chain. Subflows can have 0 or more outputs.

Subflows have their own toolbar where you can specify the number of input and output nodes as well as the subflow properties, including the subflow name, description, and appearance.

Subflow toolbar

To create a subflow:

In the toolbar of the Automate Studio flow editor, select File > Create subflow.

A new tab with a name like Subflow 1 appears at the top of the flow editor, and a new node with the name of that tab appears in the node palette. Changing that tab's name also changes the node's name.

There are two ways to open a subflow:

  • Double-click on the Subflow Node in the Node Palette.
  • Double-click on the Subflow Node on the Canvas, then select the Edit Subflow Template button.
